Here we are for a week already aboard a truck for a tour of Africa. We started the first 2 days in South Africa. We visited a Township in Cape Town with a guide who explained the history of the apartheid, kids came after us to play, we had the opportunity to get inside their houses and even taste their homemade beer.
Then we headed north, we did our first stop in a region of vineyards. We familiarized ourselves with our 18 co-adventurers and with our camping equipment. First evening we had a wine tasting and a very cold night in the tent.
The next morning the landscape begins to change to drier and rockier, we did 400km toward north to reach the Orange River close to the border with Namibia. Pleasante place, the bravest of the group went swimming in the river, in the evening, guitar, singing and dancing around the fire.
Third day, we crossed the border to enter Namibia. Shortly after we arrived at our destination where we pitched the tents and went to admire the sunset at the Fish River Canyon. This is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon of Arizona. The view was beautiful.
The fourth day. Up at 5am followed by a long day’s drive, 600km to go across the savannah and at this point we started to really feel like in Africa, by the windows of the truck we could see dozens of antelopes of all kinds, and as well ostriches, giraffes, Zebras and eagles. We all got super exited! The hunting for pictures is now officially open.
The next morning, we woke up at 4am to go to see the sunrise on Dune 45 in Sossusvlei… aaaahhh… breathtaking!
After a good breakfast at the foot of the dune, we went to Dead Vlei. The site is a natural wonder. There are dunes rising to 300m high, the size of the Eiffel Tower. The place is gorgeous. From this point of the trip, we began to fall in love with Africa… After the show we returned to the camping to go back on the road, 200km later we are pitching our tents again.
Day 6: After 150km (only) we arrived in the city of Swakopmund, back to civilization. This time we are hosted all together in a dormitory. Shortly after we arrived we went to the sky diving club, Carol jumped out of the plane in tandem, 30 seconds of free fall, the most extreme experience of her life!
In the evening we all ate together in an Italian restaurant in the city and finished the night in a night club.
The next morning we went for sandboarding the dunes. But when got to the site unfortunately the wind was too strong, they had to canceled the activity… No problem after a walk in the city center we went for 2 hours ride on a quad through the dunes. We loved it! The scenery was beautiful with the sunset.
In the evening, Mexican restaurant with the group, and we went to bed early, tomorrow we’ll hit the road again, the experience is fantastic, we really think we made the right choice by joinning this tour.
