Laos – The land of a million elephants

We had the toughest crossing of the whole trip so far to go from northern Vietnam to Luang Prabang, Laos. It took us two days bouncing on buses in precarious dirt roads to do only 600 km. Yeah, the roads in Laos are crap, but the views along the way, the rustic villages and charming towns pay off! Luang Prabang was just delightful, the greener city we’ve seen so far. We loved all the temples, food, people, street market with their crafts, local art, landscape, bars and the beautiful Mekong River. A perfect combination that makes you relax and wanting to stay longer. We should spend 3 days and ended up stying 5 days.

We did a Mahout course, where you learn to control the elephant and take a refreshing bath in the river with them. We had a day of close contact with the elephants and was certainly an unforgettable experience!

Also we visited the beautiful Kuang Si waterfall. The prettiest we’ve seen so far, with its various layers in crystal blue water to the big cascade, where you can climb to the top to see the nice view.

We did a group of friends, 3 Germans (Mandy, Jeanette and Sophie) and 1 Swiss-Italian (Marco), and every day we end up finishing the night at the Utopia Bar. A chilld-out bar just facing the river. One night we went o to the bowling club to make a few bowling matches after midnight. Coincidentally, once again we met the Dutch couple, Mark and Sophie, and we enjoyed one more day with them.

Definitely dind’t want to leave Luang Prabang!
