Egypt – In the Nile

We took a train from Luxor to Aswan and we got there right in the infernal heat of the early afternoon and the only thing we wanted was to hide in our cave, but in the end of the day we went for a walk along the river Nile, which looks more beautiful than in Luxor. We did a traditional felucca ride down the river, but the wind didn’t help much and we never really left the place. Anyway, it was still nice.

Aswan seemed much more agitated than Luxor. During the day, because of Ramadan, there are no many people in the streets and most shops are closed, but after 9 pm the city is transformed and becomes super busy.

The next day we woke up reaaaaally early, like 3 in the morning, to visit a hit in the region, the temple of Abu Simbel, which is 282 km from Aswan. Oh, it was worth the effort! The two temples were majestic and impressive from the outside and the carved and well preserved walls in the interior worth the visit. We found out that the temple was entirely removed from its original location in 1969 for this new location, a decision to save the history from the waters of Lake Nasser. A risky decision that worked.

On Saturday we decided to go in one of the famous river cruises on the Nile, which would take us back to Luxor to continue our journey to the north. We took a 5 stars cruise for a great price and had the most luxurious room of the whole trip, with a swimming pool to relax all day in the summer heat and a buffet full of choices at each meal. Hum… Life is good!

On the way a landscape of green and palm trees following the river with huge dry mountains behind.

The boat stopped at two famous temples along the way, Kom Ombo and Edfu. Kom Ombo we’ve got to see it from the boat because it was facing the river, but Edfu we didn’t visit. After seeing so many temples you end up getting more selective.

After two days of luxury we are back into our backpackers lives. Aahahah … A train of 14 hours is awaiting for us to get to Alexandria.
