To visit Belize is a completely change of scenery, is a taste of the Caribbean vibe in Latin American lands. The Creole culture, dominant, and Garifuna will enchant you and take you to the world of Bob Marley. English, reggae, percussion, crystal blue waters, idyllic islands and the second largest barrier reef in the world. If you want a place to relax this is the perfect destination.
We didn’t have Belize in our plans, perhaps for lack of knowledge, and we just loved it! Our time was short but this is for sure a top destination in Central America. Also it is very easy to travel around the country, due to its size. And we can guarantee one thing; there you will make one of the most incredible snorkeling of your life on Caye Caulker island, definitely an unforgettable experience.
What was worth it: The delightful island of Caye Caulker and its incredible snorkeling opportunity and the paradise of Tobacco Caye.
What we wanted to do but we didn’t: The beaches of Placencia and the caves of San Ignacio.
A few tips:
- TRANSPORT: Traveling through the country is very simple due to its size. The buses are old American school buses, which are not very comfortable, but the distances are short so it is not so bad. It is also easy to hitchhike, if the bus connection is not very good. It costs about 3 USD an hour.
- SNORKELING IN CAYE CAULKER: On Caye Caulker island you will have the chance to do the most amazing snorkeling of your life. Swimming on the second largest reef barrier of the world, with sharks, stingrays, manatees, sea turtles, multi-colored fish of all sizes and beautiful corals. Have you thought about swimming with 10 sharks, 20 stingrays and more than 100 fishes around? It is exactly that. So don’t miss this opportunity. Many agencies offer it for about 70 USD, including food, drinks, fees and snorkeling equipment. The tour is called snorkeling in Hol Chan Channel, Shark and Ray Alley and Coral Garden.
- SOUTHERN CAYS: There is a network of islands in southern Belize that are just marvelous and worth the visit. South Water Caye is the most expensive. Tobacco Caye is a beautiful tiny island and it was the one we did, for 40 USD per person you can have a Bungalow over its pristine waters including 3 meals and drink, a trifle by the wonder you get. Glover’s reef we heard is very nice too, it is a larger island and has a traveler vibe, but they only offer weekly packages. All islands are accessible via boat from Dangriga, Hopkins and Sittee River, depending on the island and the season.
- BOAT TRIP FROM CAYE CAULKER TO PLACENCIA: We did not do this trip, mainly because Carol was traumatized with boats, but we heard various opinions. And what made us decide about it: they told us that the scenery during the 3 days and snorkeling activities were repetitive and you could see part of this trip on your own, with more comfort and it would still be cheaper, such as Tobacco Caye, which is a traditional stop for all the boats.
Our itinerary (8 days)
We crossed the border with Guatemala by Melchor de Mencos and stopped in Belmopan to make a bus exchange, where we took the next bus to Punta Gorda to get drop off the road to catch a ride to Hopkins. After two days we went to Dangriga to catch a boat to Tobacco Caye. We spent two days relaxing on the tiny island and returned to Dangriga to catch a bus to Belize City and then the boat to Caye Caulker. After 4 days we returned by boat to Belize City and crossed the border with Mexico by bus.
