Sri Lanka – From the mountains to the beaches

After Kandy we decided to see a bit of the mountains and climbe 7 km to the top of Adam’s Peak to see the sunrise.
In fact, Adam’s Peak is a sacred mountain, with very strong religious meaning for local people. We didn’t know that and ended up on a Friday … Hum… It was not a good idea! We started hiking to the peak at 2:30 am followed by hundreds and hundreds of devotees of all ages, sex and physical conditions, and mostly without shoes. Along the way, people sleeping down the stairs, some other ill, others being carried, etc … We reached the top at 5:45 am just when the light show in the sky started. Definitely it worth the effort, the view was simply breathtaking. But there were so many people at the top that we lost each other for an hour and a half. We arrived back at our guesthouse at 10:00 am, the whole journey lasted eight hours and we had our legs hurting for 3 days.

Unfortunately we had to return once again to Colombo, due to of our visa for India. And once we were there we did a little sightseeing in the center. It is not very interesting but there are some cool old buildings. We were so happy with the approval of our Indian visa that we decided to celebrate with a nice dinner and we had a wonderful mussaka in a cool restaurant. Perfect night!

The next morning we left for the south and stayed at the Dutch fort of Galle, protected by UNESCO. The ancient city is well preserved and it seems you are back in time. Super charming city. In the first day Alexis had fever and we didn’t do much, but then we rented a scooter and went to visit the beaches around, such as Unawatuna, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa, where we did snorkeling with a giant turtle. Very cool! The beaches are not as beautiful as the ones in Thailand but the water is blue and the coconut trees everywhere add a charm to the scenery.

There we enjoyed to relax and prepare our energies for what was coming ahead … Our frenetic journey through India! Woohooo!!!!!
